Birthday Party

As I’m now getting ready for my 34th birthday, birthday parties aren’t something I even think about at this point.  But turning 1?  That is definitely cause for a celebration!  And celebrating is exactly what we did recently, with a wonderful birthday party for our daughter Briana.

We intentionally kept the guest list small, inviting only immediate family including Briana’s aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.  We thought that limiting things to only people Briana knew well and recognized would help her to have the best time possible.  My wife and I both come from large families, so even that was almost 20 people.

Briana had a great time.  She isn’t quite old enough to join them, but she loved watching her older cousins play.  She also really enjoyed it when everyone sang happy birthday to her.  We learned that she loves balloons.  For days afterward she wanted to hold the string for the large number one balloon we got.  When I was 2 or 3, all I wanted for Christmas was balloons, so perhaps it’s genetic.

One of the most common questions we received was if we were going to give her cake.  While we did get a cake for us, we ultimately decided against giving any to Briana.  She is usually suspicious of new foods, sometimes needing to try things a few times before developing a taste for it.  So, we knew she wouldn’t actually eat any of it.  Her favorite food is sliced cheese (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a close second), so instead of cake we let her eat as much cheese as she wanted, and she couldn’t have been happier.
