I Could Start to Like This….

Both our kids are now fully engrossed with their college fall semester (or so they tell us), so Martha and I are working on how to be empty nesters.   Fortunately we were able to recently enjoy two events we have been talking about for a while.

The first stop was Bruce Springsteen’s one-man show on Broadway.  We have been huge Bruce Springsteen fans for a very long time.  We have seen him in concert six or seven times, but had not seen this show.  Sometimes the anticipation makes it difficult for an actual event to live up to your expectations, but we were not disappointed.  The small, intimate theater, and Bruce’s 2 ½ hours of music and storytelling were phenomenal.

The second leg of our trip was seeing the radio show “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” recorded at Tanglewood in Lenox Massachusetts.  A gorgeous location we visited just about every year before starting a family; but it does not exactly compete with Disneyworld for the 3-15 year old demographic.  If you are not familiar with it, “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” is a hilarious news quiz show broadcast on NPR.  And as luck would have it the show was being recorded at Tanglewood in front of a live audience for the first time since March 2020.  We stopped at a local store in Lenox known for its great picnic food and got to Tanglewood in plenty of time before the show to enjoy a beautiful setting while eating too much good food.  Three hours later we left exhausted from laughing so hard for so long.  Laughter truly is the best medicine!

Lastly, here is a quick travel tip if venturing to western Massachusetts.  While the Lenox area has some beautiful scenery, hotel choices are not plentiful.  There are many wonderful bed and breakfast options, but during their short summer season most of them require a three night minimum.  However, if you stop by the Lenox Chamber of Commerce any B&B that had a last-minute cancellation will contact the Chamber letting them know they have a room available for one night.  The B&B has their non-refundable payment so they are more than happy to take a one-night reservation at that point.

So we are off to a good start, but we’re still figuring out how all this works with the kids out of the house.  So if you have any other advice or tips please let us know.
