When Opportunity Strikes
I’ve been working with Tom and Rick for over 3 years, so I think it’s now safe to tell the somewhat comical story of my interview process. As a career changer, I was extremely specific on what I was looking for. Tom and Rick had originally posted an opening in February 2021 and after loads of research I knew it was my dream role. There was only one problem: I didn’t see this job posting until nearly 2 months after it was posted, as I hadn’t previously been looking for a job. I applied anyways and thought there was no chance for me, and while I was disappointed, I at least now knew my dream job existed. (As an aside, Tom swears he never received my initial application).
Fast forward to May and I’m sitting in an airport about to go down to Key West on vacation. I’m idly checking my email when I see Rick and Tom reposted the same job I’d applied to before, but this time it was only posted an hour ago! I was ELATED, but I was also sitting in an airport with only my cell phone and a bag packed exclusively for beach activities. I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity again so I managed to promptly send them my resume and a cover letter. Luckily this didn’t take long at all, as I had previously prepared these materials to apply specifically for this job before.
Well, you all know what happened from there, seeing as I started working at Rope Financial in June 2021, but what you may not know is that when Tom requested an interview, I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass me by again, so I scheduled my initial Zoom interview for when I arrived at our hotel. Upon arrival at the hotel, I would soon learn that it would be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in: it was so small that the bed took up all of the space, and seeing as I couldn’t take the interview in that room, I literally interviewed with the hotel shower as my backdrop! Also, I was not anticipating an interview while in the Keys, so I didn’t have any interview clothes. That was a frantic realization I had 24 hours before my interview…! After consulting with a friend that no, a bed sheet would not work as a jacket on zoom, no matter how I folded it, I borrowed one of my husband’s button downs.
3 rounds of interviews later, and the rest is history!
